I know the league wanted to duplicate the Jerry West-inspired NBA logo. I know there’s all this stuff about branding and product recognition. But this logo woman still bugs me.
It’s not just that she doesn’t look like any player currently in the WNBA. I’d say she pretty much doesn’t look like anybody who’s played women’s hoops in a few decades.
I mean, that hairstyle is something out of 1950s Iowa six-on-six ball (and I say that with all due affection for that time and those players, but come on.)
And the body type is out of date. And her left foot looks weird.
Anyway, there’s always resistance to any logo change. The LPGA changed its logo last year, and it’s been to mixed results. But that was changing the entire look.
With the WNBA, I have no problem at all with them keeping the same design. It’s smart to have that kinship with the NBA. I’d just like the logo woman to resemble what players in the WNBA now look like.
It wouldn’t have to look specifically like any one player, but “sampling” from Tamika Catchings, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, Yo Griffith, Diana Taurasi, Candace Parker and Candice Wiggins sounds pretty cool to me. I really don’t know why, exactly, those were the players that first came to my mind for his logo woman, but they did. I went with “first instinct” and they were the ones. Admittedly, I’m not the most visual person, so maybe such a combination is impossible.
Again, though, the point being not to pick a specific player, but to capture the amazing athleticism, strength, grace and dynamic presence that all of the above have, as do many others in the WNBA.
If you were picking a player (or players) to model the logo after, whom would you choose?
