Don't know which I like better, remembering 6 on 6 as they used to play in Oklahoma - we dropped it early at our school with the thought that our girls were losing a chance to play in college; or the idea that there is a "Correctionville, Iowa." A journalist's dream town? Home of Liquid Paper?

Won't pretend to know enough yet to comment on T25 picks, but I am envious of the Hair Bear Bunch lunch box, I'd have loved one of those!
Let me know when you're coming to Columbia, I'll stock up on red hots and candy corn. Who doesn't love candy corn??

Rainy days and necco wafers always let me down...

Excellent points, Stace...especially: "Kalmanovic acknowledged these female athletes’ greatness and put that money where his mouth was."

All a bit sad, in its totality, but as pointed out here, what in the world of pursuing wealth and fame isn't tainted?

Thanks for the insights, Mechelle. Sharing any further developments here would be appreciated...I'm not following this anywhere else.

I agree that Shabti probably isn't the only sports owner with dirty hands, but this article isn't about" bad sport owners in general" it's about him.

Maybe I see some of the points here, but isn't it a bit hypocritical to point fingers at one Russian oligarch, when you'd be hard-pressed to find a single American billionaire whose hands are lilly-white clean?

Perhaps it's not hypocricy -- maybe just naivete? Do Donald Trump's employees question why, morally, they should or should not work for him? Or Bill Gates' workers?

And then there's the old line of three generations legitimizing wealth. How many wealthy families in this country owe their accepted millions to robber barons of the past? Should all their household staff quit in disgust because of the source of the money which pays their salaries?

Do you know anyone who drives a Mercedes? Are they ashamed of themselves?

When you think of John D. Rockefeller, do you think of shady business practices, or do you think of charity and philanthropy?

I'm sorry the ladies of team Spartak have lost their great supporter. Kalmanovic, whether from vanity, or simple enthusiasm, or because Putin demanded payback from the oligarchs (probably a combination of the three), gave these women a tremendous amount of support, gratitude and encouragement.

Say what anyone will about his past, and speculate about what he may or may not have done to accrue his wealth, Kalmanovic acknowledged these female athletes' greatness and put that money where his mouth was.

Of course they loved him. And I see no reason why they should ever feel any guilt about it. No reason why they should be held to a different standard than 99% of the rest of humanity.

It's not for us to decide who deserves grief. But I am glad Mechelle posted this. It's disconcerting that some forces that keep women's pro basketball alive have done a lot of awful things.

Other forces of suffering can probably be implicated amongst supporters of pro sports in general: sweatshops of shoe companies, exploitation of college student athletes, etc.

Good article Mechelle, the fact that they don't want to know pretty much points to the fact that they already know; they just don't want to talk about it. What shocks me is why some players are shocked and making comments about the lack of humanity in this world then applying it to someone who does not deserve their grief

On a more basketbally level, the mind swims about the changing overseas landscape. First the troubles of CSKA Moscow, now Spartak... it sort of makes you wonder what's ahead for Russian women's basketball. For now, does Spartak continue on, or will it fold with the inevitable power struggle and change of ownership priorities? What of the players? They can command top dollar anywhere, but they are likely also still under contract so may not be able to shop themselves around in the short-term if they wish.

There are a lot of questions right now. Will this turn of events be just a blip on the international stage, or will it cause a migration of non-Russian players to western Europe or other lands over the winter? If stars like Taurasi, Bird, Jackson, Fowles, and others abandon Russia, will it change the landscape of women's basketball? It's the players that have given the league its marquee value, could it now be the players who decide if it stays a powerhouse? Where exactly does the power lay at the moment...with the money or with the players?

It was great seeing you at the WEPAC game. I had always been a fan of Cynthia Cooper as a player but had never met her or seen her speak in person. I am now a BIG fan of her as a person! She did a tremendous job at the women's health forum and the other WEPAC events and she was very gracious to fans. What a wonderful event and what wonderful women. Thanks to you, Brenda and Patti and everyone who contributed to the event.
